Last Days

We mustered up the energy to visit the Soumaya Museum, a very modern six story structure covered with 16,000 hexagonal aluminum tiles. Carlos Slim, the Mexican business man, entrepreneur and investor deemed the richest man in the world in 2010-13 dedicated the museum to his wife. Situated among many new buildings the museum is surrounded by a huge shopping mall, museums, office and apartment buildings.

The museum has an extensive art collection of art from 30 centuries including PreHispanic  Mesomerican works, European masters including . Rodin, Picasso, Dali and Da Vinci, and modern Western art. The building reminded me a little of New York City’s Guggenheim, where a continual spiral walk takes you to each floor.  After three of four floors we were pooped.

Soumaya Museum:The originals and replicas of Rodin and other
artists were incredible. As was the top floor roof!

Many large modern buildings can be found in the surrounding area. Some completed but many more under construction.

Soumayer - A most unusual looking building

Our guide, had recommended  a particular ice cream, so we finished off the visit to the nearby mall (which had many of the same stores found in malls all over the US), and we gladly sat and people watched while savoring our frozen delights. Which incidentally became our dinners, too.

One of the most elegant public bathrooms in
the Soumayer

A very modern mall, with many of the same
shops you would see almost anywhere in
the World these days. Unlike the US, where
malls seem to be dying they are quite popular
in urban Mexico and Costa Rica.
